For many high school graduates, commencement season is filled with celebrations, parties, gifts, and family gatherings. But for youth in foster care, those milestones can sometimes feel very different. That’s why EmberHope staff recently came together to ensure the young people in our care felt seen, celebrated, and deeply valued as they prepared to take their next steps into adulthood.

Rather than hosting a large group graduation party, staff wanted to create something more personal and meaningful for each graduate.

“We discussed having a party, but our kids are like all kids — they want to celebrate with their friends and family,” shared Kim Fulghum, Director of Support Services at EmberHope Connections. “They want it to be a day that is special and about them, so we wanted to find some way we could still celebrate them and let them know we were proud of them.”

The result was a thoughtful collection of personalized graduation gifts centered around high-quality tumblers designed to be both practical and lasting. Each graduate received a tumbler filled with items intended to encourage and support them as they move into this next chapter of life, including gift cards, candy, inspirational notes, and heartfelt cards signed by EmberHope leadership. In total, 65 tumblers were assembled — one for each foster youth graduating this year — as a reminder that their accomplishments are seen, celebrated, and deeply valued.

“We wanted to give them something they could actually use for a lifetime,” Fulghum shared. “A lot of times kids receive gifts they may not need or want. We tried to make these gifts meaningful, practical, and encouraging.”

More importantly, the gifts served as a reminder that their accomplishments matter and that they are not alone.

“These kids often do not get birthdays or celebrations, and, at this point, many do not have forever families,” said Fulghum. “We need to let them know they are loved and praise them for their accomplishments.”

For youth who have overcome tremendous obstacles, graduating high school represents perseverance, resilience, and hope for the future. EmberHope staff say they are seeing more youth graduate, pursue college opportunities, and dream bigger for themselves.

“I want them to know that their situation does not define them or limit them,” Fulghum shared. “They have the ability to go on and do great things.”

While the gifts themselves may seem simple, the impact behind them is anything but.

“It really is such a small thing we do to show them how much we appreciate them and how proud we are of them.”

EmberHope is incredibly grateful to the generous donors who helped make these graduation gifts possible, including the teams at Hope Fostered , Hope Church, Lifepoint Church, Pathway Church, Church in the City, and Park Place Ministry Center. To all of our incredible donors, know that your kindness and support helped create moments of encouragement and celebration for youth who deserve to feel honored for all they have accomplished.

To every graduate in our care: we are proud of you, we believe in you, and we cannot wait to see where your journey leads next.
