When a child is removed from their household, the preferred option for their care is to be placed with the family. In some cases, close family friends are also strongly recommended. Maintaining connection with family members, such as siblings, increases the child’s likelihood of adapting to their new environment and minimizes the trauma of family separation.
Providing the kinship placements with the appropriate services and resources to be aware and inclusive of the children’s cultural roots will drive a sense of purpose and familiarity for the kinship caregiver and child.
The trauma children experience can be lessened when placed with people they are familiar with, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, or close friends.

For more than 90 years, EmberHope Youthville has been led by our calling to provide care for at-risk families in need. Our trauma-informed, evidence-based practices inspire, nurture, and transform the lives of children and families. Our calling is based on 1 Peter 4:10 “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”
