Earlier this week, EmberHope’s Newton campus was filled with laughter, cheers, and community spirit as Opportunity Academy and residential youth came together for our annual Fall Bash. The event featured a lively game of kickball with law enforcement and first responders, a grilled lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs, sweet fall treats, a photo booth, and plenty of time for connection.
Mandy Powell, Opportunity Academy Liaison & Activities Coordinator, shared that the day was a huge success. “This year went really well. The kids always enjoy participating in this,” she said.
One of the highlights came during the kickball game – where, for the first time since the tradition began, the kids beat the staff. “They were really excited about that,” Powell noted. The photo booth was another favorite, giving youth the chance to capture fun memories with friends.
Beyond the games and treats, the Fall Bash created something even more valuable: positive connections. Many of our kids have had challenging past interactions with law enforcement. Events like this offer a chance to rewrite those experiences. “The kids enjoy the interactions with the first responders. It’s a great way for them to see first responders as people that they can relate to and have positive interactions with,” Powell explained.

She shared one powerful moment that stood out: “One of my favorite memories is seeing the students ask Newton Police Department members to take pictures with them. Having the kids actively seeking out PD to take pictures is very different from when they were actively trying to avoid PD and cussing them out.”
The day underscored the importance of community and connection. “If anything, I hope our kids take away that there are ways to positively get along with people no matter what job they have,” Powell said.
Powell expressed deep gratitude for the ongoing partnership with the Newton Police Department and especially Det. Brian Salmans, who helped coordinate the event. “I am so grateful for our partnership with NPD and all of the first responders who help keep our kiddos safe.”
The Fall Bash wasn’t just about kickball or cupcakes – it was about building trust, creating joy, and reminding our kids that they are surrounded by a community that cares.
