Care Drive: Supporting Foster Youth Across Kansas

At EmberHope, we see firsthand the realities children face when entering foster care. Often with little notice, they are asked to leave everything familiar behind—sometimes with only minutes to gather their belongings. Too often, those belongings end up in a trash bag.

It’s a reality no child should experience.

That’s why we are proud to partner with Susan’s Kids for this year’s Care Drive, collecting new or like-new backpacks, duffel bags, shoes, and blankets for children and teens in foster care through June 5.

For many youth, these aren’t just items—they are essentials that bring comfort, stability, and a sense of dignity during times of transition. With the average foster child moving multiple times, having belongings of their own that are reliable, clean, and well-fitting can make a meaningful difference.

What We’re Collecting

  • Backpacks & duffel bags
  • Shoes for children and teens (especially sneakers and sandals)
  • Blankets for children and teens

We encourage donations in a variety of sizes and colors, as foster youth range in age from infancy through young adulthood.

Why These Items Matter

Backpacks & Duffel Bags
These versatile items support youth in their everyday lives—whether it’s going to school, participating in activities, or moving between placements. Unlike bulky suitcases, they are practical and easier for youth to keep close.

Shoes
A well-fitting pair of shoes provides more than comfort. It gives children and teens the confidence to walk into new environments—new homes, new schools—with dignity and assurance.

Blankets
A blanket can become a source of comfort and security during uncertain times. For many youth, it becomes something they can call their own—a small but meaningful constant in the midst of change.

This effort is about more than meeting physical needs—it’s about restoring dignity and reminding every child in foster care that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.

Together, we can make a difference—one bag, one pair of shoes, one blanket at a time.
