On July 1, 2024, EmberHope Connections officially stepped into a new chapter—serving over 1,500 youth in foster care, adoption, reintegration, and independent living in Sedgwick County. With anticipation and purpose, our teams hit the ground running, fueled by a shared commitment to bring hope, stability, and healing to children and families in our community.
Now, one year later, we’re reflecting on the journey—on the growth, the resilience, the challenges met with compassion, and the impact made possible through dedicated staff, community collaboration, and unwavering faith in our mission.
“The excitement on July 1 to be ready to serve children and families in Sedgwick County was unforgettable,” said Brenda Watkins, President of EmberHope Connections. “From day one, our focus has been on building meaningful connections and providing high-quality care.”
Celebrating Milestones
One of the most powerful moments this past year was our first National Adoption Day under the new contract. Surrounded by smiles, happy tears, and the joyful clapping of families and staff, we celebrated the official union of several children with their forever families. Events like this are vivid reminders of why we do what we do—and the lives forever changed by love, perseverance, and second chances.
Throughout the year, EmberHope also prioritized staff connection and appreciation through our Fostering Connections events—quarterly gatherings designed to build unity, provide training, and honor the hard work of our team members. From donut-fueled brainstorming sessions to team-building activities, these events underscored a culture of care and collaboration.
Championing Solutions and Stability
Behind every milestone is a team that never gives up. In the face of high caseloads and complex needs, our permanency teams rose to the challenge. “They’ve shown dedication, passion, teamwork, and resiliency,” Watkins shared. “They’ve continued to make progress on state outcomes while advocating for youth and creating solutions to help children thrive.”
That spirit of advocacy extends beyond our walls. EmberHope Connections has excelled in community engagement—partnering with local organizations, service providers, and government leaders to navigate the child welfare system and expand access to care. One of our proudest accomplishments? Securing long-term placements for youth, bringing much-needed stability and safety to children navigating uncertain circumstances.
“We’ve worked alongside state and community partners to ensure even our highest-acuity youth receive the treatment and support they need,” Watkins added.
Building a Culture That Lasts
Our first year wasn’t just about programs—it was about people. EmberHope launched an intentional Culture Plan, focused on best practices, emotional safety, and authentic connection. It’s already shifting the way we serve—and setting the stage for even deeper impact in year two.
Looking Ahead: Innovation with Purpose
As we move into our second year, we’re doubling down on solutions. EmberHope is actively working to expand placement capacity within Sedgwick County, increase access to prevention services, and strengthen efforts to help children return home faster when it’s safe to do so. Just as importantly, we remain committed to ensuring that every child has the support of connection and family. These goals reflect not only our dedication to meeting state outcomes but also our deeper purpose—helping every youth feel seen, safe, and supported on their path forward.
One of the initiatives we’re most excited about is launching Community Forums—a space for listening, learning, and partnering with families, foster parents, and local stakeholders to create even stronger systems of care.
Watkins’ message to the community is clear: “Our mantra is to ‘Make An Impact’ for children and families in Sedgwick County—and that’s what we are doing and will continue to do.”
