Workplace Culture Always Wins: Insights from SHRM 2025

At EmberHope, we know that the strength of our mission rests on the strength of our people. That’s why our HR team is committed to constantly learning, growing, and finding new ways to support the incredible staff who serve children, teens, and families every day. Last week, our HR team, including Connections Talent Recruiter, Nikki Hays, had the opportunity to attend the Kansas State Council of SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) conference.

This annual event gathers HR professionals from across the state to share resources, explore best practices, and provide fresh inspiration for the work of building strong, healthy organizations. The central theme of this year’s conference was one that resonated deeply with Hays: improving workplace culture.

“The atmosphere was inspirational, high energy, and very welcoming,” Hays shared. “There was such a strong focus on making connections and building stronger, healthier workplaces.”

Key Sessions & Speakers

The EmberHope team participated in a wide range of breakout sessions, covering timely and practical topics such as:

  • Supporting employees through grief and loss.
  • Harnessing creativity and engagement through play.
  • Promoting psychological health and safety in the workplace.
  • Bridging the generational gap within today’s workforce.
  • Reducing drama and fostering maturity in leadership.

Each of these sessions shared a common thread—improving supports, safety, and connection, both internally within organizations and externally with the people they serve.

The keynote speakers were equally powerful. Hays was particularly impacted by Donnie Campbell, the coach who inspired the hit series Ted Lasso, who spoke about leadership and values. She also drew inspiration from Brandon Clark and Kevin Chase on creating unbreakable team culture, and Dan Meers (better known as the Kansas City Chiefs’ mascot, KC Wolf), who spoke on courageous leadership and living a life of influence.

“These speakers encouraged and reassured me that EmberHope is on the right path to building a unified team that celebrates accountability, creativity, and individuality,” Hays reflected.

Emerging Trends in HR

One of the biggest takeaways Hays noticed was the growing emphasis on providing stability and relational support for frontline workers. Across industries, HR leaders are focusing on bridging generational gaps, encouraging innovation, and celebrating initiative as key drivers of healthy workplaces.

For EmberHope, where frontline staff are doing critical work with foster youth and families, these insights are especially relevant. “We’re excited to bring back tools and strategies to help our staff learn to respond, not react,” Hays explained. “We’re already working together as a team to make collective recommendations for the organization.”

The Power of Connection

In addition to sessions and keynotes, the conference provided invaluable opportunities to connect with other HR professionals. Hays described it as a “big think tank,” a space where ideas and practices could be shared freely for the purpose of constant improvement and growth.

These conversations affirmed the importance of HR leadership that goes beyond policies and procedures to focus on culture, connection, and care.

Why It Matters for EmberHope

When asked how these lessons translate to EmberHope’s mission, Hays was clear: “By focusing on mental safety, creativity, and celebrating those who take initiative, we as a whole organization can improve company culture. Strengthening workplace satisfaction and morale will ensure that those who hear about our organization will want to get involved.”

For Hays, one of the most valuable aspects of the conference was the chance to step back from daily tasks and focus on the bigger picture of team building and organizational growth. “The whole conference was impactful—it’s hard to pick just one moment,” she shared.

Still, she captured her biggest takeaway in one powerful statement: “Workplace culture always wins.”

At EmberHope, we couldn’t agree more. By investing in our staff and creating a culture of support, accountability, and creativity, we strengthen not only our organization but also the communities and families we serve.
